Detouring
Doggie Delinquents Preventing
and Handling Aggressive Displays 9 a.m.-4
p.m. TBA Limited to 10 dogs This session will be held outdoors to allow
maximum space for dog and handler teams. Directions to the event site will be provided for registered participants. Dog families
from all over Florida and from other states drive in for these programs. Sessions are presented by P.J. Lacette who has been
training dogs for more than 37 years, and who specializes in aggression issues as well as how to prevent them through gentle,
effective methods with pet, show and performance dogs. Aggression is based on fear. The dog fears the
approach of strangers, is nervous around children or other dogs, flees or charges when startled, barks and lunges at the neighbors’
pets or growls when the food bowl is approached. Punishment
increases the aggressive reaction in the long run, even if the dog initially seems quieter after being yelled at, admonished
or worse. Your dog has to learn to trust you to take care of the scary things, to allow you to decide who enters your home
and to be polite to other dogs on the street.
©Learn gentle, effective ways to conquer or control your dog’s
fears. Get back to the fun of living with your dog. He can learn to accept you taking his things and grabbing his collar.
©Teach your dog to more calmly accept people and dogs he sees on his walks and use self-control while they
pass.
©Develop realistic expectations for your pets. Not all dogs need to visit classrooms full of children. Some
dogs are happiest if they never go near a dog park or a doggie day care.
©Encourage your pet to turn to look to you
for guidance rather than react to stress or excitement by growling or snapping. Learn to talk dog, reading the information
his body language is providing.
© Use your own body language to help show your dog you are in
control of the situation.

Foster
boy Vincent and Shelby in a quiet moment.

I can't say enough positive things about the Detouring Doggie Delinquents class that I attended with my rescued golden girl, Shelby. It was a day of intense learning,
but you kept it interesting and at all times, offered suggestions and insight if you saw us doing something that wasn't
in our dogs' best interests. Shelby will never be a *dog park* dog. She'll probably never be the dog I could take
to GRRMF events. But....that's okay. I learned that these situations, while enjoyable to
me, might be uncomfortable for her and therefore might set her up for failure. I've continued
our training at home, and if Shelby is out with me for a trip to the vet or groomers, I've learned how to position my
body so that Shelby knows I am not only the leader, but I will protect her from anything that frightens her. Enjoy the photos. I used what you
taught in your class to introduce my two fosters to her. We did everything slowly. And the clickers and treats were always
in hand. As you can see, Shelby has completely accepted her foster brothers Vincent and Farley and
honestly seems to now enjoy their company. Who would have ever thought that *Snarky Shelby* could come this far? My sincere thanks for all you do!
